LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Preventing bed bugs from traveling home with the unsuspecting vacation or business traveler is the focus of NBC Dallas-Fort Worth in its news story. KXAS takes a different approach to the bed bug problem in looking at the steps the public can take to avoid bringing them home. As the bed bug problem has grown over the past few years so have the horror stories of infestations along with accompanying stories on bed bug infestations.
The story features unique products designed to prevent the introduction of bed bugs into dwellings which include special bed bug mattress encasements, luggage spray, dissolvable laundry bags, and a book that has been written on the subject, “The Complete Guide to Traveling Bed Bug Free”.
Encounters with bed bugs during family or business travel are a growing problem throughout the US and an unsuspecting public is the victim. In many cases travelers are ill informed as to the potential problems that await if they stay in a room that is bed bug infested. The problem has spread to all types of accommodations throughout the
Eliminating bed bugs once they are introduced into the home can be both difficult and expensive. However, there are some simple steps the public can take to reduce the risk of bringing the unwanted guests home with them when they travel.
Entomologist Richard Cooper, recognized as the leading industry expert on bed bugs and co-author of the authoritative text on bed bugs, “Bed Bug Handbook – The Complete Guide to Bed Bugs & Their Control”, is featured in the NBC story. Cooper stated, ”It is great to see the media look at the proactive things the public can do to prevent the spread of these insipid pests. I hope this story will raise public awareness.”
Phillip Cooper, President of Bed Bug Central is also interviewed in the story and discusses the trauma associated with the bugs, “Once they get into the house or into your dwelling, it’s very expensive to get rid of and very troubling and traumatic. So you want to avoid getting them in the first place,” said
Bed Bug Central has become one of the leading resources for free bed bug information as well as products the public can purchase in the battle against bed bugs. Information can be found at www.bedbugcentral.com.

Bed Bug Central partnered with bedbugFREE members across the nation to donate more that $40,000 in bed bug services to charities and those in need this holiday season.
Lawrenceville, NJ— This holiday season Bed Bug Central partnered with six pest management firms from across the U.S. to donate more than $40,000 in bed bug treatment services to those in need through, Taking the Bite Out of the Holidays, their annual holiday charity.
Taking the Bite out of the Holidays, was created by research entomologist, Jeff White of Bed Bug Central, a free information resource to the public and pest professional concerning bed bugs and bed bug related issues and treatment methods.
White created the holiday charity after seeing first hand how difficult it can be for non-profits and individuals in need to obtain effective bed bug services.
“Having dealt extensively with bed bugs, we know they can be very difficult and expensive to eliminate. We also understand there are many people out there that simply can’t afford effective treatment,” said White. “This holiday season we wanted to give back to the community and provide some relief to those in need so that they could use their money to create a happier holiday without the frustration of bed bugs.”
In order to reach as many needy individuals and charities as possible, Bed Bug Central enlisted the help of its bedbugFREE network, a network of like-minded companies that agree with philosophies and treatment methods of Bed Bug Central. Six of the membership companies partnered to make the inaugural holiday charity a national event.
The cumulative result of the participating bedbugFREE members resulted in charitable bed bug treatments taking place in
Together participating companies donated $40,000 in labor, products, treatments and services to homeless shelters, non-profit organizations, homeowners, and the elderly. Donated services included installing insect interceptors, applying heat treatments to facilities and infested furniture, chemical treatments and public health educational seminars.
One charitable recipient, the Coordinated Homeless Outreach Center (CHOC) in
“The treatment was a huge success! Our occupants are not being bitten for the first time in a long time and they are getting a good night’s sleep,” said O'Donnell. “We also received excellent information on prevention to make this treatment last. It’s going to make a world of difference going forward.”
The event’s success has prompted Bed Bug Central to continue the Taking the Bite Out of the Holidays charity as an annual event and is hoping to expand the number of participants to create a larger impact.
“We’re energized coming out of this holiday season knowing that we were able to create a positive impact in people’s lives and offer some relief,” said White. “I am personally grateful to all the PMPs that donated their resources to make this charity so successful. Based on the turnout, we plan to make this an annual event with even more participants next year.”

As reported in the Brooklyn Eagle, Brooklyn complaints to the city about bedbugs have surged more than 1,900 percent since 2004. Like rats and taxes, the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius L.) has been our boon companion throughout history. From feeding first on cave bats, it’s likely that the small, bloodsucking arthropods evolved to prefer the blood of human cave dwellers. From there, they hid in our clothing and tools as we brought them into tents and houses – and nowadays into condos, hotel rooms, cruise ships, mass transit and college dorms. The school system reports that children are bringing bedbugs home with them from the classroom. Click here for the full article.

In the fall of 2007, Richard Cooper conducted research into the leading bed bug mattress encasements. The research was presented to his fellow entomologists from around the United States at the Entomological Society of America’s annual meeting in December of 2007.
This video is a recreation of his speech to the Society and will provide you with a thorough understanding of mattress encasements and the research that was conducted comparing the effectiveness of a variety of commercially available encasements that are being marketed for use as a bed bug management tool.
Bed Bug Central’s Jeff White is interviewed by Scott Linde of Pest Plus to discuss the extremes that customers have taken to rid themselves of bed bugs. Finding bed bugs has often shown to be an emotionally traumatic event and Jeff also offers up some sensible and effective advice for dealing with infestations. See video below:
Greg Toppo of USA Today reports that Bed Bugs are on the rise in college dormatories across the United States. "A bed bug makes itself at home on a mattress. Like hotel rooms, dorms are the ideal bedbug habitat: small and crowded." The Full Article can be read here.
